It is possible to upgrade a weapon or equipment (shield, grimoire, etc.) by spending Nexus Shards (NX) at skilled artisans. These upgrades can involve various aspects, such as attack tests, damage, or enhancing certain bonuses.
The calculation of the cost for these additions or modifications as well as the acquisition conditions are detailed in the Game Master's Guide.
Upgrading a Weapon
You can enhance a weapon, either by increasing the accuracy of its attacks or by boosting its damage.
Test Bonus
You can increase your weapon’s attack accuracy by improving the test bonus, which enhances your chances of hitting your target.
The maximum value of the weapon's test bonus is limited to +3.
Short Sword STR+0 DMG 1d6 can be upgraded to Short Sword STR+1 DMG 1d6
Damage Bonus
It is also possible to increase the damage bonus of your weapon, with a maximum value of +5.
Short Sword STR+1 DMG 1d6(+0) can be upgraded to Short Sword STR+1 DMG 1d6+1
Number of Damage Dice
While it is impossible to change the type of damage die (a weapon using a d4 can never use a d6), you can increase the number of dice rolled.
However, each addition reduces the attack test bonus and the damage bonus by 1. The maximum number of dice for a two-handed weapon (such as a bow or a two-handed sword) is 4, and 3 for all other weapons.
Short Sword STR+1 DMG 1d6+1 can be upgraded to Short Sword STR+0 DMG 2d6+0
It will then be possible to again increase the test and damage bonuses of the weapon up to their maximum values.
Upgrading Equipment
Equipment that provides bonuses (to defense, attack, etc.) can be enhanced to increase the value of the bonuses they confer, with a maximum limit of +3.
Bracers +1 Melee Attack can be upgraded to Bracers +2 Melee Attack
Adding or Enhancing a Special Effect
Weapons and equipment can be customized with unique special effects, such as adding fire damage to a sword.
Short Sword STR+0 DMG 2d6+0 no special effect can be upgraded to Short Sword STR+0 DMG 2d6+0 +1d4 Fire
This option is rare as it depends on the skills of artisans who are usually exceptionally skilled and may also require the collection of specific components.
