Abilities and Attacks

In this section, we explore the offensive actions of creatures, categorized into two groups:

  • Abilities: These actions allow for complex maneuvers, following the same rules as those applied to player-character abilities.
  • Simple Attacks: These offensive actions consume a simple attack action (A) and can include gestures such as a sword strike or a bite.

ability

Each creature can have up to a maximum of 4 abilities. Abilities can have various effects, such as increasing damage, resistance to certain attacks, or even unique special skills.

Creatures do not have Mana Points (MP), so you may need to limit the number of uses of magical abilities per combat.

Simple Attack (A)

When defining a simple attack, it is essential to choose the type of attack, which will determine not only the attack bonus based on a specific characteristic but also the type of die used for damage.

The creature's level must also be considered in the attack test.

Types of Attacks and Associated Damage Dice

At the beginning of creating a simple attack, it is essential to choose the type of attack. This choice will influence the characteristic used for the attack bonus and the type of die for damage.

The following table summarizes these elements to facilitate your configuration.

Type of AttackCharacteristicDie used for damageDescription
MeleeStrength (STR)D6Close physical attacks such as sword strikes or bites. The distance is not specified as it is generally direct contact.
RangedDexterity (DEX)D8Physical attacks at a distance. The maximum range is often specified in the name of the attack.
Example: Short Bow (15 m).
MagicalIntelligence (INT)D4Magical attacks, using spells or special powers. The range can also be specified if relevant.

Determination of Base Damage

After defining the type of attack, refer to the following tables to determine the base damage according to the creature's level that distinguishes damage for standard creatures from bosses (or mini-bosses).

In some cases, the damage calculation result may be less than or equal to zero. In that case, the damage is considered to be 1.

Finalizing the Attack

Now that we have determined the attack test and the base damage of our attack, we can finalize the definition of our attack.

The tool for creating your own creature on the website will only need the information below to deduce the complete progression of the creature's attack based on its level.

  1. Name the attack (e.g., Claw Strike);
  2. Define the type of attack (Melee, Ranged, or Magical);
  3. Define the test bonuses that will be added to the base tests associated with this type of attack (between -5 and +5);
  4. Define the damage bonuses that will be added to the base damage associated with this type of attack (between -5 and +5);

Claw Strike (Melee) -2/+2

  • Claw Strike: name of the Attack.
  • (Melee): Melee Attack test using STR and the D6 as the damage die.
  • -2: to be subtracted from the Melee Attack tests.
  • +2: to be added to the Base Damage.
