Weapon attacks or ability use are resolved using an attack test (Atk).
- If the attack is physical (Atk PHY), whether melee (Atq Contact) or ranged (Atq Distance), the test result will be compared to the Physical Defense (Def PHY) of the opponent.
- For magical attacks (Atk MAG), the test result will be compared to the Magical Defense (Def MAG) of the opponent.
- It’s worth remembering that Support type actions are not subject to combat tests, and are thus automatically successful.
Whether it is with a weapon or an ability, the characteristic to be used during the attack test is always specified. Moreover, you must always add the character’s level to this result.
Dagger DEX+1 DM 1d4
The test to perform for an attack with this weapon is therefore: D20 + DEX+1 (+ Level).
Abilities have no base bonus in the attack test but may benefit from bonuses granted by certain equipment.
Magic Projectile | C - A - MAG(INT) - 50m: The character can launch a Magic Projectile, dealing 1d6+1 of magical damage.
The attack test to be performed for this ability is therefore: D20 + INT (+ Level).
If the player is equipped with a Grimoire that offers +1 Atq MAG, this additional bonus must be added to the attack test.
If your attack test succeeds, you can apply the damage noted by the weapon or the ability.
The Dagger deals 1d4 damage.
The ability Magic Projectile deals 1d6+1 damage.
Critical Success
When a character or creature achieves a critical hit during combat, the damage dealt by their attack is automatically the maximum possible based on the damage dice of the weapon or ability used.
Example 1: Attack with an Enhanced Short Sword
If a character equipped with an enhanced short sword, dealing 2d6+1 damage, scores a critical hit during their attack roll, they then deal 13 points of damage: 12 for the dice at their maximum, plus 1 from the fixed bonus.
Example 2: Attack with an Enhanced Dagger using the Lightning Attack ability
Consider a character who has acquired and unlocked level 3 of the Lightning Attack ability, and is equipped with an enhanced dagger dealing 2d4 damage:
Lightning Attack | C - A - PHY(DEX): The character can perform a quick and precise attack, targeting the enemy's weak points to inflict additional damage.
- Level 3: The additional damage increases to 2d4.
- Level 5: The additional damage increases to 2d6.
- Level 7: The additional damage increases to 2d8.
In the event of a critical result, the character not only inflicts 8 points of damage (2d4 at their maximum) with the dagger but also an additional 8 points of damage with the Lightning Attack at level 3 (2d4 at their maximum), totaling 16 points of damage.
Critical Failure
When you roll a natural 1 during a combat action, it is a critical failure. Your action simply fails.
But the opponent may seize the opportunity and gain a tactical advantage, such as disarming you, unbalancing you, or putting you in a vulnerable position. The GM should decide the specific advantage for the opponent.
Remember that the critical failure threshold can be increased based on your Charisma (CHA) value.
